St Edmundsbury District
The St Edmundsbury District of SPS stretches across Suffolk from the Stour to the Waveney. At its centre is the enchanting town of Bury St Edmunds. St. Edmund, King and Martyr, was once patron saint of England and his shrine drew many pilgrims to the Abbey whose gate still stands. It is now the entrance to pleasure gardens. Amid the ruins of the main part of the Abbey is a memorial to the barons who met here to swear on the bones of the saint that they would together force King John to sign the Magna Carta. Hence Bury is known as the cradle of the law.

The centre of Bury remains largely unspoilt. On the Buttermarket is the 12th Century Moyses Hall which has been the Borough Museum for the past century. A massive new development is now being proposed on the nearby site of the former cattle market. A major and continuing concern for the SPS is to ensure that this meets the long term needs of the town.
The SPS is naturally concerned with the protection of the many fine buildings in the district. The small town of Clare has well over 150 listed buildings. Among the Grade I are the castle ruins, the Priory and Ancient house renowned for its pargeting. The 14th century part of this house is now the town museum.

The rapidly growing town of Haverhill now provides new homes and industries in the South-West of Suffolk. The SPS is anxious that young people should be able to live and work in the county of their birth.

At Ickworth House, owned by the National Trust, the East Wing has been opened as a hotel. The SPS has supported the Trust in its attempts to make this remarkable building a viable concern.

In the St Edmundsbury District, the SPS
